What is Pilates?

Firstly pilates is for anyone, any age or body type and gender.

Pilates is named after it’s creator, Joseph Pilates, who in the 1920s developed a way of moving, a series of exercises that develops the mind-body connection and impacts everything you do, creating a sense of well being.Pilates is an amazing body conditioning programme that develops strength, postural alignment and muscle balance. It encourages the body to move with grace and natural elegance.

"The Pilates method of Body Conditioning is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit."

- Joseph Pilates

Pilates is based on several basic principles

Concentration

The aim is to be able to focus on each movement, with one movement flowing into the next, bringing mind and body together.

Breath

Some Pilates lovers consider this principle to be one of the most important. We breathe wide and deep into the sides of the ribcage. This is called "lateral thoracic breathing”.

Centring

The energy of Pilates comes from the strong centre - your core, your powerhouse. Exercise is controlled by the contraction of the deep abdominal muscles.

Precision

Precise execution of each movement and correct alignment is the key to the effectiveness of Pilates.

Flow

The mind-body connection entwines all body parts in a parallel manner. Slow, flowing, graceful, controlled movement synchronised with breathing is essential in Pilates.

Control

Every Pilates move is executed with careful control, being aware of what each part of the body is doing.
